Graduate Programs

The Department of the Classics offers four graduate degree programs. All degree programs require knowledge of Greek and/or Latin. We do not accept majors in Classical Civilizations for graduate programs unless they have taken the requisite amount of Greek and/or Latin. Only one of our masters programs, the M.A. in Classics, leads to the Ph.D. in Classics. If you wish to pursue a Ph.D. in Classics and you do not possess a comparable masters degree, apply for the masters program in Classics. If you already possess a masters degree, you may apply directly to the doctoral program.

The M.A. in Classics with Specialization in Greek (or Latin) is a terminal masters program; it does not lead to the Ph.D. in Classics, but may be linked to further graduate study in other disciplines (e.g. Religious Studies or English). The M.A.T. (M.A. in the Teaching of Latin) is likewise a terminal degree; it is designed for those who wish to train as high-school Latin teachers. Questions regarding all Classics graduate programs may be addressed to the Director of Graduate Studies in Classics, Professor Maryline Parca (mparca@illinois.edu).
