Applicants to the
Ph.D. in Classical Philology must hold the M.A. in Classics, or an equivalent
graduate degree. If you wish to pursue the Ph.D. but do not hold an
M.A. in Classics, you should apply to the masters program in Classics.
Requirements for
Admission:
M.A. (or
equivalent) in Classics with a minimum GPA of 3.25 in previous graduate
work. We do not accept applicants lacking significant experience in
Greek and Latin.
Reading knowledge
of German, French, or Italian.
Language
deficiencies which can be remedied within one year will not necessarily
disqualify a promising applicant.
Applicants whose
native language is not English must pass the TOEFL with a score of
550/written, 213/computer, or 79 on the new TOEFL iBT.
Submit 3
recommendation letters via the online application or by conventional

Submit required
GRE scores to institution code 1836 and original transcript(s) to SLCL Graduate Student Services
(as above).
Submit a
statement of purpose and α writing sample via the online application or
via conventional mail to: SLCL Graduate Student Services (as above).
The writing sample may be a paper or excerpt of moderate length (20
pages.), or two shorter papers (about 10 pages each). This sample
should showcase the applicant's ability to work in original classical
languages and incorporate relevant secondary sources as appropriate.
