Doctoral Program

Applicants to the Ph.D. in Classical Philology must hold the M.A. in Classics, or an equivalent graduate degree. If you wish to pursue the Ph.D. but do not hold an M.A. in Classics, you should apply to the masters program in Classics.

Requirements for Admission:

  • M.A. (or equivalent) in Classics with a minimum GPA of 3.25 in previous graduate work. We do not accept applicants lacking significant experience in Greek and Latin.
  • Reading knowledge of German, French, or Italian.
  • Language deficiencies which can be remedied within one year will not necessarily disqualify a promising applicant.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English must pass the TOEFL with a score of 550/written, 213/computer, or 79 on the new TOEFL iBT.

To apply:

  • Complete the Graduate College online application.

  • Submit required GRE scores to institution code 1836 and original transcript(s) to SLCL Graduate Student Services (as above).
  • Submit a statement of purpose and α writing sample via the online application or via conventional mail to: SLCL Graduate Student Services (as above).
